What “Big Data” Does

Ongoing developments in technology–especially the rapid expansion of cloud computing–have set the stage for entrepreneurs and small-business owners to reap tremendous rewards from Big Data, both by creating entirely new businesses and by finding ways to improve and/or accelerate the growth of existing ones. The range of such opportunities is virtually limitless. Here’s how to embrace the opportunity.

The biggest thing small and medium-sized businesses can do to improve their performance is embrace the opportunity Big Data affords to become more data-driven. What that means is instead of making decisions based on past experience, intuition, or gut feelings, SMBs now have the opportunity to make decisions based on actionable data points. They have the opportunity to use analytics to go out and learn new things about themselves, their markets, and their customers, and to use that information to make better, smarter business decisions.

However, embracing this opportunity requires the courage to change on the part of SMB owners. Most SMB owners have achieved success by having great instincts and making great decisions, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But in order to truly use Big Data to improve the performance of your company, you have to be willing to take actions based on what the data is showing. Harnessing the power of Big Data requires a willingness to approach it with an open mind and to make decisions that are truly data-driven. The key is combining great instincts honed from years of experience with a mindset that’s open to leveraging data points in order to deliver optimal execution.

The best approach for SMBs is to identify pain points and/or opportunity areas in the context of customer analytics, marketing analytics, and web/mobile/social analytics. Big Data can solve a lot of problems for SMBs by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of marketing programs and allowing them to adopt analytics approaches that would have been ROI-negative in the past, but it’s important to recognize that, while Big Data can solve a lot of your problems, not every problem needs or has a Big Data solution. Make sure you know what you are trying to solve and why before you pursue a solution.

Big Data opens up the possibility for SMBs to know more about their customers than ever before and to get that information to the right people within their companies at the right time to drive actions and improvements. Big Data can be used to personalize experiences across all business channels, do a better job of mapping the customer lifecycle, strategize up-sell opportunities, and increase customer loyalty.

About ECS
ECS, located in Auburn, WA & Portland, OR is a team of experts ready to help businesses with the important and often complicated decision of finding the best communication solutions for their company, from voice to data. Servicing Washington & Oregon, ECS is a “one stop shop” for network infrastructure needs. ECS designs & installs flexible cabling infrastructures that support multiple voice, data, video and multimedia systems regardless of their manufacturer.

What Is “Big Data” ?

In the broadest possible definition, Big Data is exactly what its name implies, that is, very large sets of data, usually more than 10 terabytes and sometimes as much as several petabytes. A single terabyte is the equivalent of 472 hours of broadcast-quality video or the number of words that every single adult in the U.S. speaking at the same time could say in five minutes. A petabyte is about 1,000 times larger, enough memory to store the DNA of the entire population of the U.S. and then clone everyone– twice.

Is that a lot of data? Yes, but you will be surprised at how fast you collect data these days. By collecting everything from website visits and server log files to external data such as social media activity, a company can quickly accumulate large amounts of data.

A typical small or medium-sized business deals with a number of sources of data– customer information, interactions, inventory, supply chain, human resources, websites, physical machinery, and more. In the past, each of these has been handled in a silo manner, either in-house or via a hosted service such as salesforce.com. Big Data allows SMBs to bring such data together in an integrated fashion, to gather all the information about customers, products, and operations and to identify relationships across them. This, in turn, allows for additional analysis and insights to be derived for preventing customer churn, generating better marketing offers, improving pricing, etc. For most SMB owners, the relevance of Big Data is in finding the right nuggets of insight to improve their business.

Compiling data– and there are lots of ways to do that, including buying it from aggregators, subscribing to external sources, and enriching your own– is just part of the Big Data story. The other, and arguably more important, part is what you do with it once you have it. Until recently, the computer processing power required to parse such vast quantities of data into actionable insights was only available to very large enterprises, but cloud computing has changed that.

Cloud opens opportunities for SMBs to access and analyze Big Data on an unprecedented scale. With cloud, SMBs can access analysis of Big Data ‘as a service,’ which makes it easier to obtain, lowers the cost barrier, and also creates greater ecosystems that were more likely to be separate silo’s in the past.”

SMB usage of cloud computing is growing rapidly, according to Parallels SMB Cloud Insights for the United States 2013, an ongoing research project by Parallels IP Holdings, which automates solutions for cloud service delivery to SMBs. The report pegs the SMB cloud market at almost $19 billion at the start of this year and projects 19 percent growth year-over-year through 2016. Thanks to cloud,

SMBs can now access the analytics without incurring insurmountable upfront costs. SMBs no longer need to buy, install, and maintain expensive hardware and software themselves. They can simply pay for a managed service as they need it, accessible through a simple web browser, but still access the same powerful analytics functionality as an on-premise solution.

What this means for SMBs in competitive terms is something close to parity with much larger enterprises when it comes to accessing the potential advantages of Big Data. The abundance of open source technologies in combination with affordable cloud infrastructure services from companies like Amazon, Rackspace, Google, and IBM has flattened the uphill climb for SMBs. From a capabilities standpoint, your (small or medium-sized) business has access to the exact same computing power as the world’s biggest companies.

Despite its rapid growth in the SMB space, cloud computing and the Big Data capabilities it supports still have a long way to go in terms of market penetration. “If you’re not yet engaged in a sophisticated Big Data initiative, don’t worry, you’re not alone.  We are in the early days of the Age of Data. But, the starter pistol has gone off, and the race has begun.

SMB owners who want to get a leg up on their competition should look at which areas of their business operations are most data-intensive because they generally represent the greatest opportunities to profit from Big Data.

Introducing Xima 911 Notifications

Xima Software is pleased to announce the upcoming general availability of 911 Notifications/Immediate Emergency Alerts.

Coming in a new release on December 2nd, 2013 will be Emergency Desktop Notification. This new feature will allow customers to be notified if and when any employee calls the local emergency services number. This feature will be one of many tools included in Chronicall Desktop, a software package that can be downloaded onto multiple PCs within the customer’s organization. As soon as the emergency number is dialed, the screen pop will appear, flashing in red, and will display the user and extension who just called emergency services. This feature doesn’t wait for the call to end. It will pop as soon as the number is dialed. And there’s no need to worry about whether Emergency Desktop Notification will be supported in your country or not. Each customer can specify which numbers are emergency numbers for their organization and the country they live in.

About Xima
Xima Software was formed by a group of telephony engineers and tech support personnel. After several years and hundreds of phone system installations, Xima’s founders identified a growing need for inexpensive, accurate, and easy-to-use call reporting and recording software. They needed a reporting suite that would only take a few minutes to install, would show the details of every event that happened on a call instead of just a vague summary, and could report on all users, groups, and trunks without licensing headaches. With those principles in mind, they developed Chronicall.

In 2007, Xima spun off from its parent company and began aggressive development on Chronicall. The name Xima was chosen as a modern derivation of the romantic word “cima,” meaning “the top” or “pinnacle.” The name Chronicall represents a strategic merger of accurate and detailed time-keeping with call reporting.
