Are you “Keeping an Eye Out” ?

Are you using strong passwords, the very latest antivirus software, robust firewalls, and other software security tools to keep your business safe from hackers and other evil-doers intent on stealing your data or unleashing mayhem on your computers via the Internet ?

If you are, that’s great but such protections are fundamentally useless when it comes to guarding your computers or any of your business’s other tangible assets from theft. Passwords, firewalls, & software can’t tell you that someone has broken out a window or jimmied a lock and is now busy roaming around inside your place of business, stealing you blind.

An alarm system is a good idea, but you can’t activate it during business hours, when you, or your employees, and/or your customers are on the premises. If you need to monitor a location in real time and/or if you want to record what’s happening when you can’t sit and look at a monitor, then maybe a video surveillance system is the best option for your business.

You should make sure that whatever video surveillance solution you consider allows you to monitor your cameras from the monitoring station where they’ve been installed, or from anywhere you have Internet access and a computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Video Surveillance solutions are security tools that help reduce crime, protect people, and protect your property.

Video Surveillance can deter revenue loss from stolen merchandise, destruction of valuable information, and vandalism.

Video eyes never tire
With a video surveillance system, you are always in the picture, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And you don’t even have to sit in front of a TV screen. As soon as an unusual incident occurs, an alert is automatically transmitted to a predetermined location (ie; to your mobile phone). Appropriate steps can then be taken immediately to minimize damage.

At ECS, we design, install, maintain, and upgrade a wide range of Video Surveillance solutions to meet customers’ specific needs & budgets, from large commercial enterprises to simple camera systems for small offices and businesses or even a single camera installation.

IT Networking Support

We connect Computers, Servers, Printers, Scanners, Copiers, Employees and Locations with Local Area Networks (LAN), Wired (with low voltage cabling) or Wireless (WiFi) as well as Wide Area Networks (WAN).

ECS also provides Network Design, Implementation and ongoing Support. Whether your business uses two computers or 500, ECS can assist you to design, install and manage a network that is secure, reliable, scalable, enabling you to increase productivity and keep costs down.

Our support personnel are trained & certified technicians that know how to isolate and resolve network problems quickly and efficiently. The chances are good that we’ve solved the networking problem you’re having for some other business before.

If you’re an IT Manager with too much work on your hands to implement or make modifications to your network, and need a technician to implement your design or ideas, contact ECS.

If you’re an Office Manager, CFO, CEO or a Business Owner, you might find that solving your networking issues has fallen to you simply because you know more about computers than anyone else in the company. In that case, you’ll be glad to know that ECS is dedicated to collaborating with you regarding your LAN, WAN, Wireless (WiFi) networking options, and assisting you in making the best decisions for your company.

Our goal is not simply to do the technical “stuff” and leave. We will help you explore your networking and connectivity options. We’ll make recommendations related to what we believe to be your best networking choices, ones that will work with your business processes, future plans, and budget.

Ultimately, what we do is empower you to make informed decisions, and then support you to formulate a cost-effective and efficient network design, implement it and maintain it for years to come.

Low Voltage Cabling
Are you expanding your phone or data network? Are you moving to a new location? Well, we’ve got you covered. ECS has many years of experience in low voltage cabling. We can design, install, & maintain your CAT5e, CAT 6, and/or Fiber Optic cabling.

Wireless Networking (WiFi)
Has your existing wireless network stopped working? Have you purchased the parts, but need help setting up your wireless network? Or, are you thinking about putting in a wireless network and would like a wireless networking professional to assist you and give you some recommendations?

ECS can assist you with whatever your wireless need is. We can assist with security, design, installation, and troubleshooting.

Is your existing Wireless (WiFi) secure? You’d be surprised how many businesses we help that have no security or very weak security on their wireless access. A lack of or weak security means that anyone can get on your network and use your Internet connection or attack your computers.

IP (VoIP) Phone Features

Some of the current Premise-Based Telephone Systems can accommodate three station/telephone types; analog, digital and IP. (IP can be proprietary or SIP standards based)

IP phones are the newest and most talked about of three. IP capable telephone systems (IP-PBX’s) equipped with IP phones work by converting voice into data packets and then sending the data packets over a data network. This is often referred to as Voice over IP (VoIP).

Traditional digital and analog telephones require separate wire runs to each telephone. This means one wire run for the phone and another for a workstation/PC/computer. IP phones can share the same wiring as the workstation/PC/computer, one jack for both the phone and computer. This provides a business with primary cost savings in physical material like wiring and modular jack installations. An added benefit of running voice on the data network is decreased management costs. Because voice becomes just another application on the data network, conceivably, current IT staff can manage both voice and data systems.

The most important application provided by today’s IP (VoIP) capable systems is telecommuting. An employee no longer needs to be in the office to use the phone system. Employees equipped with a VPN connection, computer, and an IP phone can connect remotely through the internet to a company’s IP (VoIP) enabled telephone system. They can use computer applications and communicate on the company telephone system seamlessly as if they were in the office.

Usually within your company’s local data network, Voice over IP (VoIP) quality will be excellent. If any quality issues do arise, they are usually not due to the devices themselves but to the quality of the connections between devices. Quality of service issues occur more often when using VoIP over the public internet (ie; over a VPN connection). Echo, jitter, and latency, to name a few. In today’s market though, VoIP quality is very good and the benefits of using VoIP most often outweigh any possible shortcomings.

IP telephones are an excellent option for small or large businesses today. IP (VoIP) systems create an enhanced work environment by decreasing maintenance costs and increasing telecommuting opportunities for remote users.

When purchasing an IP (VoIP) system it is important to consider use, features, price, support and warranty, but most critical is your choice of vendor. You need to select a vendor that you have confidence in and that you can see yourself working with over a long period of time.  Check references.  Listen to your gut feelings. Once these factors are all considered, figuring out which phone system to purchase will be an easy decision.

What is “Power over Ethernet” (PoE) ?

Traditional standards of telephone power  (NON-VoIP)
When using an old fashioned (copper wire) residential telephone line, the phone still functions in the event of a power outage. The reason is that the phone company (service provider) sends low voltage power over the phone line. This power is separate from the electric company’s network, so that even if the electrical power goes out, the phone will still function.

Business telephone systems power analog and digital telephone extensions in the same way. Manufacturers of these systems provide standards for sending low voltage power through digital and analog extension ports. This allows the extensions to have features such as backlit displays, general functioning, and ringing. In some cases, consoles with large displays or telephones with adjuncts like speakerphones also require a separate power supply. However, the majority of extensions use direct line power.

IP Phones and some History of PoE
IP phones are connected to an Ethernet data network and receive power differently. Because Ethernet wiring predates IP telephony, cabling standards never included requirements for directly powering devices like IP phones. The first IP telephones that were released came with external power supplies (sometimes call “Brick’s”). Because businesses typically deploy more phones than data equipment, provisions for power outlets at each workstation were required. This proved to be more difficult than traditional digital and analog phone installations which simply involved plugging the phone into the jack.

In order to eliminate local power supply requirements for IP phones, Manufacturers started introducing technology to send power over Ethernet wiring in approximately 2000. This industry-wide innovation began the movement to standardize Power over Ethernet (PoE)

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the world’s leading technical professional societies, ratified the 802.3af Power over Ethernet standard in June of 2003. It describes a system to pass electrical power safely, along with data, on Ethernet cabling.  The 802.3af PoE standard allows manufacturers of network hardware and endpoint devices to produce switches, IP telephones, wireless access points, and IP cameras with standardized PoE support. Consequently, proprietary forms of power over Ethernet are now obsolete.

Today, most IP phones support both 802.3af PoE and external power supplies. If a company has yet to deploy switches supporting PoE, then they can still use power supplies for their IP phones.
